CENTURA THROWS IN THE RELIGIOUS TOWEL!
Code of Canon Law Forces Catholic Hospital to Forgive Outrageously Marked Up Hospital Bill; 38-Month Battle Ends  
DENVER, CO--Since early 2003, advocates for the uninsured have been battling Denver-based Centura Healthcare for allegedly price gouging uninsured patients, charging the uninsured three or four times more than what the not-for-profit religious hospital system would accept as payment in full from an insurance company. Today, the uninsured have won the first-in-the-nation victory against hospital price gouging using one of the oldest legal systems in the world: the Code of Canon Law of the Catholic Church.

FORT MYERS, FL—Using government data collected over a five year period, Consejo de Latinos Unidos, a national non-profit organization that educates and assists uninsured Hispanics and others, released stunning financial records that shows that Lee Memorial Health System’s charges increased over triple the rate actual costs, placing an unreal financial burden on uninsured patients. Between 2001 and 2005, LMHS’ charges rose a whopping $506 million while actual costs increased by only $146 million.

OHIO HOSPITAL ASSOCIATION RATTLED AND SHAKEN BY CONSEJO  
Columbus, OH--- The Ohio Hospital Association acknowledged in an internal bulletin that the leadership and work of the Consejo de Latinos Unidos had brought about “ongoing scrutiny” of the hospital sector. The OHA bulletin states, “Under particular scrutiny are executive compensation levels, hospital billing and collection practices, and challenges to hospital governing board authority.” K.B. Forbes, Executive Director of the Consejo, stated, “Let’s hope the OHA reforms its membership instead of trying to help them defend the indefensible.”

ADVOCACY GROUP CALLS ON IRS TO REVOKE PROVENA COVENANT’S FEDERAL TAX EXEMPT STATUS

SAN JUAN, PR— One-in-three patients in Puerto Rico who contacted a consumer advocacy group suffered health trouble or cardiovascular damages from Vioxx after ingesting the pain reliever for less than 18 months, according to a report released by the Consejo de Latinos Unidos, a national advocacy group that assists and educates Latinos. Merck, the manufacture of Vioxx, has held firm to the belief that there is no scientific evidence, no clinical proof that health damages occurred against patients with less than 18 months of Vioxx use.

A new report shows that Hispanic patients and physicians in Puerto Rico appear to never have been informed in Spanish about the cardiovascular risks of Vioxx. The Consejo made several key findings in its report, title La Muerte (Death in Spanish), including that Merck appears not to have adequately informed the public or medical community in Puerto Rico...  Read the press release

In 2002 the council took on Tenet Healthcare over what it called "aggressive billing practices" and succeeded in forcing the nation's second-largest for-profit hospital chain to make changes in billing for the uninsured.

During a National Press Club news conference in Washington, Judith Montilla Vega talked of coming to Florida from Venezuela with dreams her son, Rodney, would receive an education and the medical treatment only the United States could offer. However, the 6-year-old's brain tumor had returned in 2004 and doctors had given the child only two weeks to live.

"The first question they (the hospital) asked was 'Did Rodney have insurance?'" Mrs. Vega said. "I told them, 'No' and their next question was, 'Do you have the money to pay?'"

Vega did not have the money for hospital or physician expenses, so hospital officials said they could not help Rodney. She turned to the Consejo de Latinos Unidos and said within two days they had made arrangements for Rodney's surgery...
